The Mitigation Team at McCallister Law Firm is based in Kansas City, Missouri. We are an established team that provides services for Death Penalty cases. The Mitigation team is available to work on state or federal cases throughout the United States. We work closely with all defense team members, the client, and their family to bring clients life story to the fact finders. We believe in communication, respect, integrity, and a strong work ethic.

Our team is highly motivated and experienced, and brings unique and necessary skills to a team in order to get the job done. Cynthia L. Short has been practicing as a criminal defense lawyer for 18 years and is recognized as a leader in defending capital cases. Through law practice and experience with capital cases she has discovered in order to properly defend our clients a thorough life story must be developed. The method we use to develop a compelling case for life was learned over the life of a career as a capital defender.

Our mitigation team will provide all the necessary services to ensure a client’s story is fully developed, and useful to the team. Our team includes a paralegal and the availability of two Mitigation Investigators with backgrounds in mental health and social work as well as a capital trial lawyer working as a Mitigation Specialist. Ms. Short has developed and presented mitigation to fact finders (prosecutors, judges and juries) in over 60 cases. With over a decade of capital work completed, Ms. Short does not have anyone on death row. Our team has strengths in interviewing, research, relationship building, mental health, addictions, poverty, effective work product and assessment. Each member of the team brings their unique background and expertise to help support the trial team, and help the client tell their life story.
