News: 6 people killed after 47-vehicle pileup on SE Missouri interstate
MISSISSIPPI COUNTY, MO – Six people died after a massive pileup of 47 vehicles on I-57 in southeast Missouri Thursday morning.
According to FOX4, the collision may have been triggered by a driver hitting their brakes on the interstate. Visibility was extremely low due to heavy fog in the area.
The crash scene, which sparked fires after impact, involved 47 vehicles total including several tractor-trailers.
Multiple injuries were reported with some being treated on the scene and others, including two first responders, taken to an area hospital. One person was taken to the hospital via Life Flight.
Six deaths were confirmed after the recovery effort. The identities of those deceased have been withheld until further notice.
The major collision closed down both northbound and southbound lanes of I-57.
